The government has appointed Mohammad Muslim Chowdhury,
the former Finance Secretary, as the Chairman of state-owned Sonali Bank. He
will serve in this position for the next three years. Meanwhile, former
Secretary M Fazlur Rahman has been appointed as the Chairman of the state-owned
Janata Bank.
The order was issued in separate notifications signed by
Afsana Bilkis, Deputy Secretary of the Financial Institutions Division at the
Ministry of Finance. The notification regarding the appointment of the Chairman
of Sonali Bank states that Mohammad Muslim Chowdhury has been appointed
Director and Chairman of Sonali Bank for a three-year term from the date of his
joining. It requests that necessary actions be taken by the provisions of the
Bank Companies Act, 1991, including obtaining approval from the Bangladesh
Bank.
On August 20, the then Sonali Bank Chairman Ziaul Hasan
Siddiqui was forced to resign under pressure from officials and employees. This
was amid rumors that the former Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank had been
appointed Chairman of Sonali Bank due to his close ties with an industrial
group.
Meanwhile, the smooth transition of leadership at Janata
Bank, with the resignation of Dr. SM Mahfuzur Rahman and the appointment of M.
Fazlur Rahman as the new Chairman, ensures the stability and continuity of the
bank's operations. The new Chairman will serve for the next three years,
providing a sense of security and confidence in the bank's future.
