The
Appellate Division of the High Court has set today, Wednesday (July 10), for
hearing the applications filed by two students and the state regarding the stay
order on quota restoration. Obaidul Hassan, the Chief Justice will lead a
five-member bench of the Appellate Division to commence the hearing at 11:30 am.
Two
students of Dhaka University have applied to the Appellate Division seeking
cancellation of the High Court's decision to stay the annulment of the ‘Freedom
Fighter’ quota in government jobs for first and second-class categories. On
Tuesday (July 9), they filed the application in the relevant branch after
obtaining permission from the Chamber Court of the Appellate Division.
Subsequently, Justice Md. Ashfaqul Islam's Chamber Court ordered the
application to be placed for a regular bench hearing in the Appellate Divisionon
on Tuesday (July 9).
At
that time, senior lawyer Shah Manjurul Haque conducted the hearing for the two
students in court. He was accompanied by lawyer M. Harunur Rashid Khan.
The
two students from Dhaka University were Al Sadi Bhuinya, a student of the
Department of Sociology, and Ahanaf Saiid Khan, a student of the Department of
Urdu and also the president of the Dhaka University Journalists' Association.
Until
the abolition of the quota system in 2018, 30-56 percent of government job
positions were reserved for the children of freedom fighters under various
quotas. Six years ago, students and job seekers rallied under the banner of the
Bangladesh Sadharon Chhatro Odhikar Sngrakkhon Parishad to demand reform of
this quota system.
In
response to this movement, on October 4, 2018, the administration issued a
circular abolishing the quota system.
